Chicago (Dec. 20, 2024) – Today, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis has appointed five new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Chicago: Bishops-elect Timothy J. O’Malley, Lawrence J. Sullivan, José María Garcia-Maldonado, Robert M. Fedek, and John S. Siemianowski. The episcopal ordination of the bishops-elect will take place at Holy Name Cathedral in early 2025 at a date to be announced. The bishops-elect will remain in their present assignments for the time being. Changes in their archdiocesan roles are announced in due course.

“We are grateful to the Holy Father for the gift of these new auxiliary bishops,” said Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago. “These fine archdiocesan priests reflect the people of this particular church and the many talents of our local presbyterate. Yet, each has a solid and notable record of pastoral service rooted in their shared fidelity to the Gospel and their generosity in using their unique gifts for the good of the church and society.”

Bishop-elect Timothy J. O’Malley, named titular bishop of Numida, was born Dec. 17, 1959 in Evergreen Park to Michael J. and Eileen Shea O’Malley. He holds a B.S. in Management from Purdue University, a CPA from the University of Illinois and a J.D. degree from the DePaul University College of Law. He received his STB and a master of divinity degree from the University of St. Mary the Lake Mundelein Seminary in 1997 and was ordained to the priesthood later that year.

Bishop-elect O’Malley served as associate pastor at St. Agnes of Bohemia Parish in Chicago from 1997 to 2002 and then as pastor of St. James Parish, Highwood until 2007. He was pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Round Lake from 2007 to 2015 and St. Genevieve Parish from 2015 to 2018, in Chicago. In 2018, he was named pastor of Most Blessed Trinity Parish in Waukegan where he currently serves.

In addition, Bishop-elect O’Malley has been a member of the Priests’ Placement Board and Dean in Vicariates IVC, IVA and IB.

Bishop-elect Lawrence J. Sullivan, named titular bishop of Lamfua, was born Jan. 22, 1966 in Chicago to Terrence and Renee Sullivan. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from Niles College Seminary of Loyola University Chicago, in 1988 and a master of divinity degree from the University of St. Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1992. In 2019, Bishop-elect Sullivan earned a M.S. in Ecclesial Management from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Bishop-elect Sullivan served as associate pastor, and later pastor of St. Celestine Parish in Elmwood Park. He was named pastor of St. Christina Parish in 2008 and of Christ the King Parish in 2014, both in Chicago. While continuing to pastor Christ the King Parish, he has served as Interim Vicar for Vicariate VI since 2023.

In addition to his parish assignments, Bishop-elect Sullivan has worked in the bereavement ministries of the archdiocese since 2013 as associate priest director and as interim priest director of Catholic Cemeteries. He is a member of the Archdiocesan School Board and has been a member of the College of Consultors and a member and vice-chair of the Presbyteral Council.

Bishop-elect José María Garcia-Maldonado, appointed titular bishop of Fallaba, was born March 24, 1979, in San Julián, Jalisco, Mexico, to José María Garcia de Anda and Angelica Maldonado Villalpando. He attended local public elementary and middle schools before entering the Minor Seminary of the Diocese of San Juan de los Lagos Introductory Program in Arandas, Jalisco. He then completed philosophy requirements at the local major seminary. In August 2001, he joined his family who had immigrated to the United States eight years earlier and in August 2002, he entered the Casa Jesus Program of the Archdiocese of Chicago. In 2003, he entered the University of Saint Mary of the Lake University Mundelein Seminary, completing a master of divinity degree in 2007. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2008 and was named associate pastor of St. Sylvester Parish in Chicago.

Bishop-elect José María Garcia-Maldonado served as associate pastor of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines and then as administrator and pastor of Good Shepherd Parish in Chicago. In 2021, he was named pastor of St. Jose Sanchez del Rio Parish, Chicago where he continues to serve.

In addition to his parish assignments, Bishop-elect Garcia-Maldonado has served as assistant director of vocations at St. Joseph’s College Seminary and as a Member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors. He was also administrator of the parish of Our Lady of Tepeyac and Dean of Vicariate IVC and IVA.

Bishop-elect Robert M. Fedek, appointed titular bishop of Dardano, was born July 7, 1979 in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, to Józefa Maria (Robak) and Roman Kazimierz Fedek. He attended local

public grammar and high schools and in 1998, he entered the Archdiocesan Theological Seminary in Kraków, Poland. In 2001, he was admitted to the Bishop Abramowicz Preparatory Seminary in Chicago and then attended the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary, where he received a master of divinity degree in 2005. He was ordained to the priesthood that same year.

Bishop-elect Fedek served as associate pastor of Saint Mary of the Annunciation Parish in Mundelein from 2005 to 2010. He was pastor of Our Lady of Victory Parish from 2010 to 2017 and of Immaculate Conception Parish (Talcott) both in Chicago from 2017 to 2020.

In 2020, Bishop-elect Fedek was appointed administrative secretary to Cardinal Cupich. He has also served the archdiocese as Assistant Vocation Director in Vicariate I, Member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors and as Coordinator of the Polish Ministry.

Bishop-elect John S. Siemianowski, named titular bishop of Grazianopoli, was born in Chicago on May 26, 1960 to Lydia and Joseph Siemianowski. He attended Our Lady of Charity Grade School and Morton East High School, both in Cicero. In 1982, he earned a B.S. and a Secondary Education Certificate from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. In 1984, he entered the University of St. Mary of the Lake Mundelein Seminary completing a master of divinity degree and an STB in 1989. He was ordained to the priesthood later that year.

Bishop-elect Siemianowski served as associate pastor at St. Francis de Sales Parish, Lake Zurich, St. Mary Parish, Buffalo Grove and St. Elizabeth Seton Parish, Orland Hills. He served as pastor at St. Agnes, St. Paul, and St. Kieran Parish, in Chicago Heights and in 2021, he was named pastor at St. Juliana Parish in Chicago where he continues to serve.

In addition to his parish assignments, Bishop-elect Siemianowski has served as a Member and Executive Secretary of the Priest Placement Board.
